A PSA 10 "Raincoat Pikachu" sold for $8,400,000 on Fanatics Collect late on September 27, 2026, making it the second most expensive Pokémon card ever sold publicly. The lot page records a $7,000,000 winning bid after 64 bids, with the buyer's premium taking it to $8.4 million. Two weeks later, on October 11, 2026, a different PSA 10 copy brought $1,037,000 at Goldin, about an eighth of that price.

Updated October 12, 2026 with the Goldin result.

What Sold at Fanatics Collect

The card is a 2015 Japanese promo, not a pack card. Here is the full identity from the slab and the lot page:

Card

  • Name: Pikachu, XY-P promo
  • Artwork: "Raincoat Pikachu" by Y. Fujishima, a winner of the Pokémon Art Academy illustration contest
  • Language: Japanese

Slab

  • Grade: PSA 10 Gem Mint
  • Cert: 24753376

Sale

  • Venue: Fanatics Collect Weekly Auction, after the card was flash inserted on September 16
  • Winning bid: $7,000,000
  • Final price with buyer's premium: $8,400,000
  • Bids: 64
  • Close: scheduled for 10 PM ET on September 27, the sale ran into extended bidding and closed about 11:24 PM ET

Another PSA 10: $1,037,000 at Goldin

A different PSA 10 copy of the same card closed in Goldin's TCG Weekly Auction (September 30 to October 11) late on October 11, 2026, US time.

Sale

  • Venue: Goldin, 2026 TCG Weekly Auction
  • Winning bid: $850,000
  • Final price with Goldin's 22% buyer's premium: $1,037,000
  • Bids: 64 (by coincidence, the same count as the Fanatics Collect sale)
  • Cert: 24842807
  • Close: about 10:30 PM ET on October 11

That is still more than six times the $156,250 Heritage result from June, but about one eighth of the Fanatics Collect price two weeks earlier, for the same card in the same grade.

Why an Art Academy Card Can Outsell Almost Every Charizard

The Pokémon Company announced a Japanese illustration contest tied to the 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy on November 28, 2014, with entries open from December 13, 2014 to February 1, 2015, as Famitsu reported. One category asked for dressed-up Pikachu designs, which is where the raincoat comes from. Winning artwork was printed as real Pokémon cards. According to Kotaku, each winner privately received 100 copies of their card, and none were ever sold at retail.

That makes every Art Academy design one of the scarcest printed Pokémon cards, and the market noticed fast. Two days before the Pikachu closed, an Art Academy Mudkip by Daisuke Ochiai in PSA 10 sold for $3,720,000 in the Fanatics Collect September Premier Auction. Two Art Academy cards cleared a combined $12.12 million in one week. Our Pokémon Art Academy cards guide covers the contest and the other winning designs.

The Number That Should Make You Careful: 57 PSA 10s

Scarcity has limits here. Kotaku, citing PSA's population report via Polygon, counted 57 copies graded PSA 10 on September 30, 2026, and the Fanatics Collect lot page still showed a population of 57 on October 12. Kotaku notes that Fujishima appears to have made many of the 100 cards available. Compare that with the Pikachu Illustrator, which has a single PSA 10.

The price history of the same grade is what makes this sale so striking:

PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu, recorded sales

  • 2025: $16,100 and $26,100 (PriceCharting, via Kotaku)
  • June 2026: $156,250 at Heritage Auctions (via Kotaku)
  • August 2026: $79,999.99 (via Kotaku)
  • September 27, 2026: $8,400,000 at Fanatics Collect (lot page)
  • October 11, 2026: $1,037,000 at Goldin (lot page)

The Fanatics Collect price was roughly 54 times the June result and about eight times the Goldin result that followed it. Writing on September 30, before the Goldin sale, Kotaku's John Walker said of the earlier, cheaper sales: "There's no meaningful difference between these slabs and the one sold two days ago on auction site Fanatics Collect."

What It Means if You Own One (or Want One)

One record sale is a data point, not a price guide.

Confirmed: the Fanatics Collect lot page records 64 bids and an $8,400,000 final price for cert 24753376. Goldin's lot page records an $850,000 winning bid and 64 bids for another PSA 10 (cert 24842807). With Goldin's 22% buyer's premium, that comes to $1,037,000.

Reported: Kotaku says it has been claimed the sale was legitimate and paid, and asked Fanatics whether it had any concerns about it.

Not announced: the buyer, the seller, or any comment from Fanatics Collect.

What has changed since: on October 11, 2026, another PSA 10 sold at Goldin for $1,037,000, not $8.4 million.

If you hold a copy, the useful comparables are completed sales in the same grade, and there are now two very different ones from the same fortnight. If you are shopping for one, check the asking price against both. As of October 12, 2026, another PSA 10 (cert 26164617) is listed on Fanatics Collect at $8,400,000, while the same page shows a Fanatics guide price of $276,770.

Where the $8.4 million sale ranks among public Pokémon card sales as of October 12, 2026:

1. Pikachu Illustrator, PSA 10: $16,492,000 at Goldin, February 16, 2026, recorded by Guinness World Records

2. Raincoat Pikachu, PSA 10: $8,400,000 at Fanatics Collect, September 27, 2026

3. Pikachu Illustrator, PSA 9: $5,000,000 at Heritage, September 18, 2026, per Heritage's auction report

4. Art Academy Mudkip, PSA 10: $3,720,000 at Fanatics Collect, September 25, 2026

Our most valuable Pokémon cards guide tracks the full list, and the Pikachu Illustrator PSA 9 sale explains why one grade point moved that card by millions.

Where to Go From Here

Pikachu cards rewrote the record book in September 2026, and most collectors will never touch an Art Academy slab.
