A BGS Black Label is a Beckett Grading Services Pristine 10 where all four subgrades (centering, corners, edges and surface) are 10, the highest grade combination Beckett gives, and it comes in a black label with gold type, according to Beckett's own explainer of the BGS process. That perfect score is why Black Label cards can sell for many times a PSA 10 of the same card. In May 2026, a Black Label Mew ex sold for $236,543 at Goldin.

Current as of October 10, 2026. Beckett's website has been offline since September 9, 2026, so Beckett definitions below come from archived copies of Beckett's own pages.

What a Black Label Is

Beckett introduced the Black Label on November 28, 2014. "A card worthy of four '10' subgrades is worthy of a special label," Beckett wrote in its announcement. Beckett said the Black Label is for modern cards only, not for its BVG vintage grading of cards from 1980 and older.

Beckett's grading page, archived May 3, 2026, shortly before Beckett's May 2026 label redesign, lists three label colors:

Black: a perfect Pristine 10, with four 10 subgrades.

Gold: Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 9.5.

Silver: all other grades.

The overall grade and the four subgrades both print on the front of the label.

How Beckett Sets the Overall Grade

On a subgraded BGS slab, Beckett gives four subgrades and an overall grade in half-point steps. Its Base tier, per the May 2026 grading page, also offered grading without subgrades, with a $3 charge for any 10s where subgrades are added. The overall grade is not the average of the four. In Beckett's words, from its 2018 walkthrough of the BGS process: "The overall numerical grade is not a simple average of the four subgrades." Beckett says the lowest subgrade carries the most weight, and that the final grade rarely lands more than two levels above the lowest subgrade, so subgrades of 10, 6, 10 and 10 give a 7.

Gem Mint 9.5: needs at least three 9.5 subgrades, with the fourth no lower than 9.

Beckett's worked example: subgrades of 9.5, 9.5, 9 and 8 give an overall 8.5, not the 9 an average would suggest.

Gold vs Black at Pristine 10: Beckett reserves black for a Pristine 10 with four 10 subgrades, so a Pristine 10 with any subgrade below 10 gets a gold label. Beckett's pages do not spell out every subgrade mix behind a gold Pristine 10.

What Black Labels Sell For

The premium comes from scarcity. Two 2026 examples:

Paldean Fates Mew ex #232, BGS Black Label 10

  • Sale: $236,543 at Goldin in May 2026, a $193,888 hammer plus 22% premium, 59 bids, also reported by SI
  • Scarcity: Goldin's lot text said it was one of two Black Labels among more than 1,370 copies in Beckett's census when the lot was posted
  • Context: our most valuable Mew cards guide covers where that sale ranks

Ascended Heroes Mega Gengar ex SIR #284, BGS Black Label 10

  • Record: $85,000 on eBay on May 9, 2026, SI reported, a sale also listed in PriceCharting's sales log
  • Since then: PriceCharting lists Black Label copies at $23,000 on eBay on August 13, 2026 and $28,500 at Fanatics Collect on October 7, 2026
  • PSA 10 for comparison: about $1,878 on PriceCharting as of October 10, 2026. Our most valuable Gengar cards guide covers the rest of the Gengar market

The same Black Label card can sell far apart: the May record was about three times what copies brought in August and October. Treat one record sale as one data point.

Black Label vs PSA 10 and TAG

PSA 10: PSA gives one overall grade without published subgrades, per its grading standards, so a PSA 10 and a BGS Black Label measure different things. Our explainer on how PSA grading works covers PSA's fees and submission steps.

TAG Pristine: TAG says its Pristine grade goes beyond the industry standard for a Gem Mint 10 and makes up less than 1% of the cards it grades, per TAG's grading scale, checked October 10, 2026. That is TAG's own figure.

Beckett has not published a Black Label share of all BGS grades, so treat any percentage you see online with care.

Beckett in 2026: What Changed

Ownership: Collectors, the parent company of PSA, announced on December 15, 2025 that it would acquire Beckett and keep it as an independent brand. In May 2026 Beckett launched a redesigned label that keeps the four subgrades, Sports Collectors Digest reported.

Site outage: Beckett took its platforms offline after detecting suspicious technical activity. Its October 2, 2026 update says certification, grade records and population databases remain intact, with cert lookup and pop reports in the first phase of restoration. We covered the outage in Beckett's restoration plan.

Until the pop report is back, you cannot check how many Black Labels exist for a card on Beckett's site, and a Black Label's cert number cannot be checked online. Read our guide to checking a BGS slab without cert lookup before you buy one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a BGS Black Label?

It is a Beckett Pristine 10 with all four subgrades (centering, corners, edges and surface) at 10. Beckett calls it the highest possible grade combination and holders it with a black label with gold type. Beckett introduced it on November 28, 2014, and said then that it was for modern cards only.

What is the difference between a BGS black label and gold label?

Beckett's label key gives black to a perfect Pristine 10 with four 10 subgrades, gold to Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 9.5, and silver to all other grades. A Pristine 10 with any subgrade below 10 gets gold.

Is a BGS Black Label worth more than a PSA 10?

Often far more for the same card. A Paldean Fates Mew ex in BGS Black Label 10 sold for $236,543 at Goldin in May 2026, while PSA 10 copies were about $2,917 on PriceCharting as of October 10, 2026. Goldin's lot text said it was one of two Black Labels among more than 1,370 BGS copies when the lot was posted. Prices vary a lot between copies, so compare recent sales of the exact card and grade.

How is the BGS overall grade calculated?

Not as an average. Beckett says the lowest of the four subgrades carries the most weight, and gives the example of 9.5, 9.5, 9 and 8 subgrades producing an overall 8.5.
