Michael Jordan's red road jersey from Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $14,000,000 in a private sale, Hunt Auctions announced on October 12, 2026. Hunt calls it a world record for any piece of basketball memorabilia. AP counts it as at least the third jersey from those Finals to pass $10 million, and the second announced in under two weeks.

The Jersey Behind the $14 Million Sale

Game

  • Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, June 5, 1998
  • The Bulls won 93-88 to even the series, and Jordan scored 37 points, per Hunt
  • Chicago went on to win the series in six games for Jordan's sixth and final title, AP reported

Jersey

  • Red mesh Chicago Bulls road jersey, number 23
  • Photomatched to Game 2 by MeiGray Authentication and SIA Authentication, per Hunt
  • Autographed by Jordan, with the signing authenticated by Upper Deck

Provenance

  • Bought directly from the Chicago Bulls by a collector, Hunt says, with letters documenting its history
  • It changed hands only once after that first purchase

Sale

  • Private treaty sale, not a public auction, handled by Hunt Auctions of Exton, Pennsylvania
  • Price: $14,000,000, as announced by Hunt. The release does not say when the deal closed or whether fees are included
  • Buyer: collector Ron Firman. Hunt says he is originally from Rye, New York. AP describes him as a Miami real estate investor

Where It Ranks Among Game-Worn Jerseys

Hunt says the price is the second highest ever paid for a game-used jersey in any sport. Only one jersey has sold for more, according to AP: the Babe Ruth jersey from his 1932 World Series "called shot," which brought $24.12 million at Heritage Auctions in August 2024.

The public Jordan record has moved twice in under two weeks. On September 29, 2026, his white home jersey from Game 3 of the same Finals sold for $12,260,000 in a Joopiter auction, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Before that, the record belonged to his Game 1 jersey, which Sotheby's sold for about $10.1 million in September 2022. Hunt's release places the Game 3 auction after this deal, so the private sale may have been agreed first, but Hunt gives no closing date.

Bar chart of the biggest game-worn jersey sales: Babe Ruth $24.12 million, Jordan Game 2 $14 million, Jordan Game 3 $12.26 million, Jordan Game 1 about $10.1 million

What Hunt and the Buyer Said

David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said in the October 12 release that Jordan's importance within the sports memorabilia marketplace "has now escalated to an elite asset class more typically reserved for iconic works of art."

Buyer Ron Firman said in the same release: "I'm very excited about the purchase."

What It Means for Collectors

Three things stand out.

Our take: game matching and the autograph carry the price. A jersey matched to one specific Finals game is a different asset from one that is only "game issued." Game 1 came with a MeiGray photomatching certificate, Sotheby's lot notes say, and the Game 3 jersey was photo-matched to two Getty Images photos, NBC New York reported on September 30, 2026. Game 2 is the only one of the three signed by Jordan, The Athletic noted.

Private sales are harder to compare. The Game 1 and Game 3 prices came from public auctions. The Game 2 price comes from Hunt Auctions, which brokered the private deal, so collectors cannot see the bidding or the fee structure.

The top basketball jersey is back above the top card. As of October 14, 2026, the most paid for a basketball card is $12,932,000, for the 2007-08 Exquisite Jordan and Kobe Bryant Dual Logoman 1/1 at Heritage in August 2025, according to our list of the most expensive basketball cards. The Game 2 jersey's announced price sits above it, though one is a public auction result and the other a private figure.

For the year's other big basketball record, see how a Cooper Flagg debut patch card sold for $8.04 million in September 2026.
