Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm in February 2027, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) will add God Packs, where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare, to 1 in every 1,000 Booster Packs, according to Wizards of the Coast's October 5 announcement. The same update removes foil commons and uncommons from Booster Packs and takes three cards out of every Collector Booster. Wizards says none of the changes come with price adjustments. Here is exactly what changes, and what it means for players and collectors.

What Changes in 2027

All of this starts with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, which releases on February 5, 2027. God Packs then come to every Magic Multiverse set, and Wizards says Universes Beyond sets are expected to get them in 2028. Wizards has not given a separate Universes Beyond timeline for the other changes.

Booster Packs

  • Play Boosters are renamed Booster Packs
  • Foil commons and uncommons are removed, and a foil card is no longer guaranteed in every pack. Any foil you do open will be a rare or mythic rare
  • Wizards says it is increasing the drop rates of foil rare and mythic rare cards, without giving the new rates
  • Japan Showcase cards, previously Collector Booster only, can now appear in traditional foil in the wildcard slot

Collector Boosters

  • Two commons and one uncommon are removed from the foil slots and not replaced, which the Wizards Play Network describes as three fewer cards per Collector Booster. GameSpot puts it at 15 cards down to 12
  • Some foil commons and uncommons remain in Collector Boosters

Price

  • Wizards' Blake Rasmussen wrote on October 5, 2026 that "none of these changes come with any adjustments to prices"

What Is in a Magic God Pack

Wizards describes a God Pack as a booster where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare. There are two versions:

Booster Pack God Pack (1 in every 1,000 Booster Packs)

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 10 non-foil rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 2 non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards

Collector Booster God Pack (1 in every 300 Collector Boosters)

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 1 foil land
  • 3 foil default-frame rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 3 non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 5 foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards

For organized play, the Wizards Play Network strongly recommends that stores pull a God Pack opened at a competitive Limited event, let the player keep it and replace it with an unopened Booster Pack from the same set at no charge. Stores keep discretion for casual events like Prereleases, but at competitive events where Wizards provides the product, such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, God Packs must be removed and replaced. The WPN says the celebration card reads "You did it!"

Why Wizards Is Making the Change

Rasmussen wrote that the goal was to make boosters more exciting to open without raising the MSRP, and that adding God Packs and Japan Showcase cards to Booster Packs meant Wizards had to find room in its printing capacity. Removing foil commons and uncommons is how it made that room.

Early coverage flagged open questions. Star City Games noted that Wizards gave no details on whether God Packs come to MTG Arena or Magic Online, and GameSpot highlighted concerns about smaller Collector Boosters and scarcer foil commons.

What It Means for Collectors

  • Foil commons and uncommons from new sets get scarcer. From Nauctis on, Booster Packs no longer contain them and each Collector Booster has three fewer, so Collector Boosters become the only source. Older printings are not affected
  • A God Pack is a pull, not a product. The WPN says God Packs are not sold separately and look exactly like a normal Booster Pack or Collector Booster from the outside, so nobody can know one is a God Pack until it is opened. Treat any listing for a "sealed God Pack" with caution
  • Same price, three fewer Collector Booster cards. Wizards says MSRP is not changing with this update, so each Collector Booster holds three fewer cards for the same price

Our take: if you chase foil commons and uncommons from Booster Packs, sets released before Nauctis, including Reality Fracture (October 2026), are the last Multiverse sets confirmed to include them. Wizards has not said whether 2027 Universes Beyond sets keep them. The term "God Pack" is familiar from Pokémon, where it describes packs full of hits, as our Pokémon God Packs explainer covers. What Wizards Has Not Announced Yet

  • The new foil rare and mythic rare drop rates
  • Whether God Packs come to MTG Arena or Magic Online
  • A Universes Beyond timeline for the foil and naming changes
