Raincoat Pikachu PSA 10 Sells for $8.4 Million, Second Only to the Illustrator

A PSA 10 "Raincoat Pikachu" sold for $8,400,000 on Fanatics Collect late on September 27, 2026, making it the second most expensive Pokémon card ever sold publicly. The lot page records a $7,000,000 winning bid after 64 bids, with the buyer's premium taking it to $8.4 million. The catch: another PSA 10 copy of the same card sold for $156,250 just three months earlier.
What Sold, Exactly
The card is a 2015 Japanese promo, not a pack card. Here is the full identity from the slab and the lot page:

Why an Art Academy Card Can Outsell Almost Every Charizard
The Pokémon Company announced a Japanese illustration contest tied to the 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy in November 2014, with entries running through February 2015, as Famitsu reported. One category asked for dressed-up Pikachu designs, which is where the raincoat comes from. Winning artwork was printed as real Pokémon cards. According to Kotaku, each winner privately received 100 copies of their card, and none were ever sold at retail.
That makes every Art Academy design one of the scarcest printed Pokémon cards, and the market noticed fast. Two days before the Pikachu closed, an Art Academy Mudkip by Daisuke Ochiai in PSA 10 sold for $3,720,000 in the Fanatics Collect September Premier Auction. Two Art Academy cards cleared a combined $12.12 million in one week.
The Number That Should Make You Careful: 57 PSA 10s
Scarcity has limits here. Kotaku, citing PSA's population report via Polygon, counts 57 copies graded PSA 10. Kotaku notes that Fujishima appears to have made many of the 100 cards available. Compare that with the Pikachu Illustrator, which has a single PSA 10.
The price history of the same grade is what makes this sale so striking:
PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu, recorded sales
- 2025: $16,100 and $26,100 (PriceCharting, via Kotaku)
- June 2026: $156,250 at Heritage Auctions (via Kotaku)
- August 2026: $79,999.99 (via Kotaku)
- September 27, 2026: $8,400,000 at Fanatics Collect (lot page)
That is roughly 54 times the June price for a card in the same grade. Kotaku's John Walker put it bluntly on September 30: "There's no meaningful difference between these slabs and the one sold two days ago on auction site Fanatics Collect."

What It Means if You Own One (or Want One)
One record sale is a data point, not a price guide.
Confirmed: the lot page records 64 bids and an $8,400,000 final price for cert 24753376.
Reported: Kotaku says it has been claimed the sale was legitimate and paid, and asked Fanatics whether it had any concerns about it.
Not announced: the buyer, the seller, or any comment from Fanatics Collect.
So treat $8.4 million as the price one buyer paid for one slab, not the value of all 57 PSA 10s.
If you hold a copy, the useful comparables are the next completed sales in the same grade, not the headline. If you are shopping for one, expect sellers to anchor on $8.4 million while the June and August results sit in plain view. The gap between those numbers is where careful buyers do their homework.
