The Zeta Set Returns for 24 Hours on December 9, and Original Buyers Can Cancel Until October 9

Wizards of the Coast will reopen the Zeta Set, its Secret Lair x MSCHF release, for a single 24-hour order window on December 9, 2026, and every order placed in that window will be fulfilled, Secret Lair's Matthew Hodgins wrote in an October 1 update. Because the runback changes what original buyers signed up for, they can cancel their orders until October 9. Here's what went wrong, what's confirmed and what isn't.
What Went Wrong With the Zeta Set Sale
The Zeta Set went on sale on September 2 at MagicSecretLair.com, at $19.92 per seven-card Zeta Booster, per Wizards' launch post. It was the first Secret Lair product sold as random packs, as our launch-day breakdown explained.
The sale did not go well. According to Hodgins' update:
- An investigation led by Secret Lair's processing partner found an "external service disruption" early in the sale
- Hodgins chose to pause the queue, and thousands of people waited roughly an extra hour and a half with no real information
- Once the backlog cleared, stock was closer to sold out than Wizards had estimated
- Some buyers hit checkout errors, and confirmation emails took several days
Wizards had already called the sale a disaster in a statement the same day. Hodgins' October 1 post put it plainly: "A sale isn't a success just because inventory hits zero."
The December 9 Zeta Set Runback
Confirmed by Wizards
- Date: December 9, 2026
- Window: a single 24-hour order window, so nobody needs to be online at an exact minute
- Fulfillment: everyone who orders during the window gets their order
- Shipping: estimated to begin in the second half of 2027
Not announced yet
- Start time and time zone
- Price for the runback
- Per-customer limit (the original sale was capped at 12 per customer, TheGamer reported)
Wizards says it has some leftover stock from cancelled and failed orders, but too little to sell without another queue, which is why it chose a full runback instead. Wizards says it will share more on shipping timing as the sale gets closer.

If You Already Ordered the Zeta Set
- Nothing has shipped yet. Wizards says most orders haven't been charged.
- Shipping is estimated to start November 5 from the North America store, and December 8 in Europe and the UK.
- To keep your order, do nothing.
- To cancel, submit a support ticket by October 9, 2026. "No explanation needed," Hodgins wrote.
- No confirmation email? Contact Secret Lair Customer Support.
What It Means for Collectors
The runback changes the math on the Zeta Set. A sold-out, single-window drop is now a product anyone can order on December 9, and Wizards hasn't said how many copies that will mean. ICv2's October 2 report also describes it as fulfilling every order placed in the window.
Our take: secondary prices were set when the Zeta Set looked like a one-time sellout. The December 9 window changes that picture, and Wizards hasn't said how many copies it will make. If you bought at $19.92 in the original sale, the real choice is timing: keep your order and receive it from an estimated November 5 (December 8 in Europe and the UK), or cancel and wait for runback shipping in the second half of 2027 at a price not yet announced. Decide by October 9.
