What Is a Rookie Debut Patch Card?
A Rookie Debut Patch Autograph, or RDPA, is a 1-of-1 card with a player's autograph and the patch they wore on their uniform in their first big-league game, per Topps. Topps introduced the Debut Patch with MLB for the 2023 season, per ESPN, and the first cards came in 2023 Topps Chrome Update baseball, with 91 RDPAs that year, per Topps.
- Baseball: the cards come in Topps Chrome Update, not flagship Topps Update. Each card has a hologram code on the back that you can check at mlb.com/authentication, per Topps
- Basketball: the NBA version arrived in 2025-26 Topps Chrome Updates Basketball, released August 6, 2026, which Topps called a first for the program. The patch comes from each player's first NBA game
- Other sports: Topps also makes MLS Debut Patch Autographs, per Topps, and UEFA says its new Champions League debut patch becomes a signed 1-of-1 Topps card from 2026/27. Our UEFA debut patch report has the details
"If that player becomes the next Willie Mays, you have the most special 1-of-1 card," MLB's director of authentication Michael Posner told Front Office Sports in September 2025.

Why Rookie Debut Patch Cards Sell for So Much
- One card per player. Every RDPA is a 1-of-1, so there is no population to compare and no second copy to wait for.
- A real moment. The patch was on the field for the player's first game. "The milestone matters because a player only makes their debut once," Bleecker Trading owner Matt Winkelreid told Topps' Ripped in September 2026.
- The player's career. Our take: prices follow performance. Crow-Armstrong's card sold after a 40-homer, 40-steal season, per SI, and the NBA cards sold for stars of the 2025 draft class.
- Big auctions, big bidders. Flagg, Harper and Knueppel together brought $13.26 million in a single Fanatics Collect auction, per Heavy, and Yahoo Sports counted four RDPAs past $1 million in a single week.
How to Check a Debut Patch Is Real
- MLB: an authenticator puts the patch on the uniform and watches it through the game. Afterward it gets a tamper-proof hologram and goes to Topps, per Front Office Sports. The hologram code on the card back can be looked up at mlb.com/authentication, per Topps.
- NBA: the patch carries authentication stickers that show through a window on the card back, and the number can be checked in CGC's certification database, per Yahoo Sports.
- Grading: the five million-dollar cards each carry two PSA grades, one for the card and one for the autograph. Kurtz, Holliday and Sullivan sold ungraded. Our guide on whether PSA grading is worth it explains what each grade adds.
