Pokémon GO Mega Squads Starts Today, but One Maschiff Route Waits Until Friday

Maschiff is arriving in Pokémon GO, but the event does not unlock every encounter route at once. Mega Squads runs from September 8 at 10 a.m. to September 14 at 8 p.m. local time. The headline additions are Maschiff, its evolution Mabosstiff, and the debut of Shiny Flamigo. Before clearing an afternoon for the hunt, put Friday on the calendar too.
The Maschiff Detail Easy to Miss
The official event announcement places Maschiff in 5 km Eggs and Field Research encounters from September 11 at 10 a.m., not the opening morning. Those routes finish with the event on September 14. Maschiff is also among the GO Pass encounters. Evolving one into Mabosstiff takes 50 Maschiff Candy.
That makes this a two-stage plan rather than one undifferentiated week. Check the active in-game encounter pool before spending resources. A debut headline is not a promise that every old Egg or every research task can produce the new Pokémon.
Shiny Flamigo is another first for this event, but an available Shiny is not a guaranteed one. Choose whether your priority is a new Pokédex entry, a favorite character, or Mega progression. Trying to finish every objective at once is a quick way to turn a short event into a chore.
The Free Pass Has a Separate Claim Deadline
The free Mega Squads GO Pass arrives automatically. Its progress window ends September 14 at 8 p.m., while earned rewards remain claimable until September 16 at 8 p.m. local time. A paid upgrade is optional.
Set a reminder for the claim deadline, not just the end of encounters. Our practical suggestion is to claim completed rewards as you go, then check the pass once more before it disappears. There is little benefit in leaving an already earned reward sitting behind an unpressed button.
For a different kind of Pokémon checklist, our 30th Celebration overview separates the physical card release calendar from in-game events. They can share familiar characters without sharing distribution rules.

Mega Progression Is a Different Goal
Beedrill and Houndoom gain access to Super Max during Mega Squads. To understand that label, start with the official Mega Evolution explainer: a Pokémon must first reach Max, the third Mega Level. Moving beyond it requires that species' Mega Energy. Simply repeating evolutions is not the whole requirement.
The more recent Mega battle update adds another distinction. Pokémon eligible for Super Max gain an additional Charged Attack while Mega Evolved, with attack power scaling by Mega Level. Eligibility for that extra attack and actually reaching the highest level are not identical conditions.
For returning players, this is the useful question: do you want another entry in the collection, or a stronger version of a Pokémon you already use? Those goals call for different resources. Look at your current partner's status before deciding which activity gets your time.
A Collector's Plan Without the Completion Pressure
Write down one main target and one optional target. Check the live route for each, keep enough storage available, and stop when the session stops being enjoyable. None of that requires a perfect collection or a paid pass.
The same approach works for physical cards. A character-led binder is easier to enjoy when you know which version you want. Our 30-Pikachu card tracker follows that specific anniversary subset rather than treating every Pikachu image as the same collectible.
Where to Go From Here
Check Mega Squads in the app today, reserve the later Maschiff routes for Friday, and save the pass claim deadline. If the character hunt makes you want to browse physical cards, the Polkastarter marketplace shows contents, values, and chances before opening, with a free mystery pack at signup. Its real-card catalog is separate from Pokémon GO rewards. Do not assume an event Pokémon or new release is stocked without checking the listing.
