How to Ship Pokémon Cards Without a Packaging Mistake
To ship Pokémon cards safely, protect the card first, stop it moving inside the package, then choose a postal service that accepts the finished package. A sleeve solves surface contact. It does not, by itself, solve bending, moisture exposure or a mailer that qualifies for the wrong postage.
Photograph and Identify the Card Before Packing
Check the order against the card in front of you. Match the language, collector number, finish and condition. Two cards with the same artwork can represent different listings. Our rarity reference can help with identification, but the buyer must receive the exact version ordered.
Photograph the front and back before packing, including disclosed wear. Keep those images with the order record. Pictures are useful documentation, not a substitute for the selling platform's delivery requirements.
Build Protection in Layers
TCGplayer's customer-order shipping guidance starts with a soft sleeve and recommends further protection such as a top loader. It also recommends a resealable team bag to limit movement.
Slide the card into a correctly sized sleeve without catching a corner. Place that sleeve into a suitable rigid holder. Secure the holder in a bag so the card cannot simply migrate out of the opening.
For a parcel, add appropriate stiffening and cushioning. Keep adhesive away from the card. Make the package secure but easy for the buyer to open without cutting toward the collectible.
Do not mail an unprotected card loose in an envelope. A successful delivery address does not make inadequate packaging safe.
Decide Between an Envelope Service and a Parcel
This is where well-intentioned packing can go wrong. Extra cardboard may protect a card but also make an envelope too rigid or too thick for the chosen service.
eBay's current standard-envelope help page, checked September 14, 2026, limits that service to packages weighing up to 3 ounces, with uniform thickness below 0.25 inch, and excludes graded trading cards. Its trading-card rules also distinguish raw-card quantities from cards in top loaders.
Those are service-specific rules, not universal permission to send every raw card that way. Check category eligibility, value limits, protection coverage and the listing's available label options. Do not substitute a remembered price from an old screenshot.
A slab, a thick bundle or a card needing more substantial protection should be assessed for an appropriate parcel service. If uncertain, show the completed package to the carrier before purchasing postage.
Tracking and Insurance Answer Different Questions
Tracking records movement and delivery events. Insurance or shipping protection has separate eligibility, evidence and claims rules. One does not automatically supply the other.
The eBay seller-center explanation describes standard-envelope tracking as limited integrated tracking. Do not sell it to a buyer as equivalent to every scan or handoff available on a parcel service.

Weigh and measure the finished package, not the empty envelope. Check the address, return address, label readability and the order record. Keep the receipt or acceptance evidence provided by your chosen service.
