The most valuable Mickey Mantle card ever sold is a 1952 Topps #311 graded SGC 9.5, which brought $12.6 million including buyer's premium at Heritage Auctions in August 2022, ESPN reported. Mantle prices are still climbing: in August 2026, a PSA 8 copy set a record for its grade at $3,721,000. Below are the most valuable Mantle cards by confirmed sale, what each grade sells for, and where the $12.6 million card now ranks among all sports cards.

Current as of October 6, 2026. Prices include buyer's premium where the sale was a public auction.

The Most Valuable Mickey Mantle Cards Ever Sold

1. 1952 Topps #311, SGC 9.5: $12,600,000

  • Sale: Heritage Auctions, August 2022, per ESPN and Sports Collectors Digest
  • Why it matters: ESPN described it as the finest known example of the card. Its seller had bought it ungraded for $50,000 in 1991. Heritage's director of sports auctions, Chris Ivy, called the 1952 Topps Mantle "the most iconic post-war card in the world" in an August 2022 statement, per ESPN

2. 1952 Topps #311, PSA 9: $5,200,000

  • Sale: private sale announced by PWCC Marketplace, January 2021, per ESPN and Sports Collectors Digest
  • Why it matters: the same card had sold at Heritage for $2.88 million in April 2018, per ESPN

3. 1952 Topps #311, PSA 8 (MBA Silver): $3,721,000

  • Sale: Heritage Auctions Summer Platinum Night, August 21, 2026, after 78 bids or registered phone bidders, including buyer's premium, per Heavy and Sports Collectors Digest
  • Why it matters: a record for the PSA 8 grade, beating the previous PSA 8 record by more than $1.2 million, per Sports Collectors Digest. Its MBA Silver label placed it in the top 15% of the 35 PSA 8 copies, per Heritage, as reported by Heavy

4. 1951 Bowman #253 (rookie card), PSA 9: $3,192,000

  • Sale: Memory Lane, December 2022, per Sports Collectors Digest
  • Why it matters: Mantle's true rookie card. SCD reported it as one of nine PSA 9 copies, and the previous record was $750,000

5. 1952 Topps #311, PSA 9: $2,880,000

  • Sale: Heritage Auctions, April 2018, per ESPN and MLB.com
  • Why it matters: the same PSA 9 that later sold privately for $5.2 million, so it shows how fast top Mantles appreciated

6. 1952 Topps #311, PSA 8: $1,830,000

  • Sale: Goldin, June 2026, per Heavy and Yahoo Sports
  • Why it matters: it was not a PSA 8 record. Copies in that grade brought more in 2021, per Sports Illustrated via Yahoo Sports. Two months later, a stronger PSA 8 brought more than twice as much, which shows how much eye appeal matters within one grade

7. 1969 Topps #500, white letter variation, PSA 9: $933,484

  • Sale: Memory Lane, December 2022, per Sports Collectors Digest
  • Why it matters: a rare printing variation from Mantle's final card year. SCD noted it was one of three PSA 9 copies and that the last public PSA 9 sale before that was $13,000 in 2009

What a 1952 Topps Mantle Is Worth by Grade

The 1952 Topps is the card that sets Mantle prices, and the grade decides almost everything:

  • SGC 9.5: $12,600,000, Heritage, August 2022
  • PSA 9: $5,200,000 private sale, January 2021
  • PSA 8: $3,721,000 for an MBA Silver copy at Heritage in August 2026, and $1,830,000 at Goldin in June 2026
  • PSA 7: $716,750 at Heritage in August 2026, per Sports Collectors Digest

PSA 10 copies numbered three when ESPN reported the 2021 sale, and Heavy reports 35 copies graded PSA 8. We found no public sale of a PSA 10.

Is the 1952 Topps Mantle Still the Most Expensive Sports Card?

Not anymore. A 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant dual Logoman autograph sold for $12,932,000 at Heritage in August 2025, per CNN and ESPN, and ESPN ranks the $12.6 million Mantle second. ESPN puts the $11 million Shohei Ohtani Dual Gold Logoman 1/1, bought privately in July 2026, third. Our $11 million Ohtani card report covers that sale.

The Mantle is still the most valuable single-player card on that list, and the top vintage card. For the full ranking across sports, see our most expensive trading cards list and our most expensive baseball cards guide.

Why the 1952 Topps Mantle Is the Hobby's Most Famous Card

  • Scarcity in high grade. #311 was part of a late, high-number series that sold poorly, and few copies survive in top condition
  • The legend. Topps' Sy Berger often told a story of dumping unsold 1952 high-number cards at sea. The details vary between tellings, but the story is part of the card's fame, and Goldin's listing for the June 2026 PSA 8 still repeats it
  • The player. Mantle remains one of the most collected baseball players, and his cards set records again in 2026
